Nintendo Switch Ad Rhetorical Analysis Polished Draft

This was a somewhat hard paper to write as I felt like I was repeating myself in every paragraph. This was one of the first papers that I wrote so much with a small starting point. I hope that my paper makes sense to everyone as I did enjoy writing it even with the small mistakes it may have.

Rik Henderson’s Ad about the Nintendo switch is effective as it shows both the positives and negatives of the console and keeps a neutral tone in writing about it. He keeps his tone neutral so people could look at the effects and not his feelings about the console. This ad was first released and there was not that much information on the console at the time and Nintendo was recovering from the WiiU console failing. So this ad is telling the audience of the magazine all that the Switch can do and what future the console could have.

Many people at one point have played a game on a Nintendo console as it is a large household name, but most remember the fun they have playing with others than the game being played.  Nintendo likes to associate its games and its gameplay with family and memories and with the Switch being advertised as being both a handheld device and as a console system you can play on your television you can enjoy it in multiple ways. Now while this could have been seen as a risky move for the company it did in the end become very popular and is still being used and having new games released consistently. A factor for this was the Switch being unique and willing to take risks and try new things with their consoles. Another factor being that Nintendo values quality over quantity with everything they have made so far and if there are issues, they try to fix them as soon as they find out.

This ad is in a technology magazine feature alongside with Many gadgets that were trending at that time as well as different ads. In the magazine the ad for the switch is on top of a bright red background. While there are no people at all in this ad only a hand grabbing the console, it makes it more inclusive since there is no specified gender or age associated for this console. Under the image of the switch the first words that someone would see is “The Switch Is On” as well as the small captioning right underneath those large bold words. Then to the right of the image and the large caption is the small article for it and it is divided up into four categories with the first explaining what the switch is the next talking about the games the third one talking about price and the fourth one being if the Switch is worth its price or not. While there is not much use of pathos in this ad there was a lot of logos since there was a more technical talk of the console from its display modes to the controllers and even the other features that it would have coming along for it and the pricing for each feature. While the author does not use ethos at all since they do not bring up any credentials in the ad.

In my personal opinion the ad does a good job of trying to sell the switch even if it doesn't intend to. It gives you all that you need to know about the console from a technical standpoint. While it is a somewhat lengthy read it provides good information for the audience who may consider buying the console. It also provides the drawbacks of the console with the fact that you have to purchase the games whenever they are released and those games never fall between a very expensive price unless they are older games or games made by smaller companies. While I do like the fact that they mention how while you are buying the console the games are separate it is a given. They also mention in the ad the separate add ons you can get which are an extra set of controllers or extra accessories.  It is useful information to know because you may want to play with more people with this console it can also be a drawback for many people and they may not want to buy the console.

I may have been interested in this ad many people may not be because of how lengthy it is. It's lengthy in its technical use of words that draws in the crowd of people who like to know about games an consoles that they can play these games on. This ad also may not be seen by many since it's from a small online magazine. What could be done maybe is if they simplified the language just a bit to reach a wider range of people. Another way to drag in more people is by shortening the ad and focusing more on what it can offer. Another thing the ad could do was talk more about the negatives of the console just so that there is more of an even side to things they could have talked more on how there are no streaming service says on the console. I would also have rather they talk more on others people’s opinions about the console coming out soon.

By focusing on others opinions we can get a more human opinions about the console. I personally think that there was not enough opinions in the ad while it is great that they were neutral about it and only gave technical terms and talked about the console in technical terms some human opinions would have been appreciated. Like how do other people from different age categories feel about the switch since it was mainly targeted for families with younger children.

In conclusion the ad does a good job keeping a neutral opinion about the switch but it could do better if it had some more input about how they felt on the switch. All in all this ad on the Nintendo switch is very good but it could use a lot more input from families with younger children and more mature audiences, as this would bring a lot more life into the advertisement.
